Man, I just got home from a jaunt, going from Rhode Island to Tampa...then up through Indy to Iowa and back. I barely missed the hurricane (I finally ended up right in the tail end on I-65 through Nashville), and have been listening to the aftermath.
I'm not a psychic or anything, but so far, I've been right about several things:
1. I told people this storm was gonna blow up to Cat 5. I also told them that it was going to hit the gulf states, and not Florida...
2. When they said it was going to hit New Orleans, I told people that it was going to destroy it...even though most were hoping it would weaken.
3. When the guys were laughing on national television at a bar on Bourbon Street, I said they were all gonna die.
4. Authorities are suspecting that hundreds or maybe thousands are dead...I think it's going to be mid 5 figures...15,000 dead at least before it's all said and done....and maybe even more if they don't get some help soon...
And now the rant:
What the fuck is going on with these crazy fuckers in New Orleans? First, the ones that stuck around despite the local and state government's STRONG admonitions were just morons and in a way, deserve the torturous hell they are going through.
That's not enough, though...then you have the truly crazy motherfuckers who SHOOT AT HELICOPTERS? HELL-O...these people are trying to help you and you shoot at them? I hope the national guard kills you before disease and hunger does.
Ok...then we have the thousands of people who just couldn't leave in time. I actually feel sorry for these people. It's sad that they are trying to get the hell out of this hell-hole and aren't having much luck. I heard about these people being crammed in the superdome...with morons who raped women in the bathrooms...it's like some crazy nightmare for these people who are just trying to survive. Then you have the ones who are stuck on I-10, waiting...stranded...waiting for anyone to help them. No help has come.
So, now I come to the crux of my rant: Why the fuck hasn't anyone helped these poor people before the President got involved? Where the fuck was the national guard and why didn't they have orders as the storm was rolling through?
President Bush is doing the right thing in rallying aid from countries around the world, and from charitable organizations...shit, I heard even Nicolas Cage donated a million bucks to the effort.
However, I keep mentally smacking Bush for the blunders he is making. First, he is letting the left blame him for a natural disaster that nobody but God is to blame for...and he is letting them blame him for not acting swiftly enough, when it was clearly in the state's purview to act quickly. If it were me, I would have deployed every member of the National Guard from every surrounding state...I would have hit the area with 25,000 troops and medics and it would be overkill and everyone would be like, "damn, it's an invasion...", and I would be the hero....
That's what he's missing out on. I just wanna smack him for missing out on this great opportunity to bring his approval ratings soaring out of the gutter.
So again, I say WHAT THE FUCK?!? Why are there people STILL waiting for food and water? Why did the state of Louisiana block I-10 and won't let people get out so they can walk to Gretna and escape the stench from the Convention Center? Let these people out! I was listening to Geraldo Rivera, and while I hate him, I was moved by his pleas that somebody, ANYBODY, DO SOMETHING for these people. There are babies and children and old people dying in the streets and the local police are feckless and simply throw up their hands and say, "It's not my problem"...what the fuck? It IS your problem, Pig!
I'll admit that I felt a great sense of glee when the storm was going to hit New Orleans. I listened to Sirius Radio with anticipation and an almost certain lust of the death that was coming to those stupid enough to stay in it's path...but to see people tortured is more than I wanted. I wouldn't wish starvation and dehydration on the innocent. A quick death would be most mercyful.
As I watch the scenes when I'm able, and listen to the reports on the news...I'm reminded of the scenes from Stephen King's "The Stand"...when New York was decimated from the disease...I think his deadly vision came true, but wasn't as widespread...and happened a lot further south.
