AUGUST 5, 2006
JERILEE'S PUB
BEYOND AGONY
MALTESE CROSS
Between the Brickyard 400, 3 other shows going on around town and 2 weeks notice of the show, attendance was nowhere near where it should have been.
That didn't stop New Palestine natives BEYOND AGONY and Columbus' MALTESE CROSS from doing what they do best and giving those who were there a killer show.
BEYOND AGONY began their set with a censored scat performance with a pro-legalization message. I say censored because I was told that the dude usually has a certain pro-legalization stance that the rest of the band is afraid will be misunderstood...so he advocated legalizing illegal immigrant prostitution instead. VIVA LA RAZA, PUTA!
Then the band struck up some evil tunes that seemed to me to be very pantera-like. It struck me as a much more melodic Pantera, if you will, with some definite european influences in the guitarwork. The only downside was that Jerilee's is a small bar...and the P.A. just couldn't handle the drummers wicked Roland V digital kit, and it dragged everything else down into a muddy muck. Every member played their instruments with precision and it's my opinion that if they were in a larger hall or even a larger club...they would have pushed nothing but pure power down our throats.
Their newest album, "The Last of A Dying Breed" comes with a free autographed DVD...the packaging is as professional as it gets, so it's well worth the $5.
MALTESE CROSS then took the stage around midnight...thrilling us with their own brand of thrash. I can't say enough how cool these guys were and when they came out with their "Ode To Ash", it was just tits. Any fan of Bruce Campbell's Evil Dead will give props.
These guys just got out of the studio from recording their newest offering, "Watchers of The Door of Chaos" and they couldn't be more ready to take hold of the gauntlet and run with it as far as they can. I can't wait to see them again at the FFF in Terre Haute, and no fan of metal should miss their performance.
