First, let me say that I wish every all ages club in Indiana had the dedication that I found in Terre Haute. There's a core group of about 15 or 20 kids who support this club and the bands every Saturday night, no matter who's playing. These kids don't complain about the ticket price, they just want a place to hang out...unlike other areas I've been to where the scene is so splintered with each group calling each other names and starting pissing matches just to climb to the top of the shitpile. Not these kids...for them, I give major props and my thanks.
THE GHOST TOWN & SHALLOW GRAVE SATANIC SYMPHONY cancelled in the last days before the show...citing unsurmountable problems...
So, starting off the afternoon, SOMETHING EVIL took the stage. Composing of myself, Ron Moody and Chad from The Archaeologist on drums...we showed everyone what a noise/experimental madness act
generally does: clear out a room. If only someone had passed out hits of acid beforehand...they might have enjoyed the flanged feedback and my evil laughter at the end. I know Dr. Satan did.
THE ARCHAEOLOGIST then took the stage as the first real act of the night. I don't really know how to describe these guys because I've only heard one other band like them...Philadelphia's XIIIPFP. Good stuff. Mix that with some good-natured humor onstage and it was memorable.
DISTOBIA then showed those in attendance the meaning of TRUE death metal. I had just learned that these masters have been around since '92. They've been with several labels and had varying successes. There should be more bands like them. Imagine a mix of Morbid Angel, Cryptopsy and
Obituary. They reminded me intensely of the best of old-school death...maybe Suffocation. I can't say enough how much I enjoyed their set. Blood Tribe didn't show up due to miscommunication problems, so Distobia played for an hour. They have our gratitude.
SILOT then took the stage and played for a few minutes...cutting their set short because they weren't feeling the love, apparently. I didn't catch enough to get a real impression of them.
Columbus' MALTESE CROSS then brought their intense old-school thrash act to the stage. These guys kick ass, in case you didn't read my last review of their show. These guys bring a professional attitude and don't play games. They just bring the metal in a big way. In addition, they were cool enough to let the next act borrow their equipment, which was beyond kindness...considering it was
THE DEVIL'S ALL-STAR BAND...another jam/doom/noise act...this time featuring Joe from Maltese Cross on drums, Ron Moody on A-Tuned guitar and myself on vox and evil guitar. We were supposed to have PsychoMatthias on bass...but he opted to stand in the crowd poking fun at us...this time, it was less noise and more substance with dark riffage and trippy solos...and my screams of impending sorrow. At least this time, we didn't clear out the room and it was overheard that we sounded better than expected. Two songs later, we gave the stage up to a couple of kids who were working the concession stand...they said they knew 10 chicks who would come to see them play. 2 showed up and their set was worse than ours, if you can imagine that. Those who were there didn't have to...Maltese Cross cut them off but quick...much to our barely suppresed evil laughter.
DR. SATAN then took the stage with his amazing one-man grind act. I was wearing my Macabre shirt, so he graced us all with his rendition of "Ed Gein". Walking out on stage with a bloody apron, a beautiful black Warlock with the widow headstock, an amp and drum machine set to "shred"...this dude showed us what a determined musician will do to get his music heard. My only complaint was that the soundman needed to turn his guitar levels up more.
Evansville's EXEMPT then took the stage...this time with a lead singer who accents their powerfully progressive metal tunage with a power all his own. Having seen them perform without a singer for so long, I wasn't sure what to expect, but it was worth the wait. They chose what I believe is the perfect singer for their brand of metal. If you get the chance you MUST hear and see their new act.
Travelling all the way from Kendalville and having a truck melt down on the way...FORTHCOMING still made it to the show. These guys have a dedication almost unmatched in the metal world. While other lesser bands would have cancelled their set, cried and gone home...these guys forged their way to Terre Haute to show us what they're made of. I still have not found their equal or even a band to compare them to. They just bring the metal in a way that I really enjoy...
Closing out the night, A FAILED ESCAPE then took the stage. How can I say anymore about these guys. They've played every festival I've thrown and keep making me laugh, mosh and bang my head every time. Playing some old favorites and some new ones, they took us to a happy place for about an hour...poking friendly fun at Psychomatthias who was relentlessly chasing Adam with his camera...running frenetically around the floor...the rest of the band leaping about and acting as silly as a band can get...doing their famous "cover-band medley"...if you don't know AFE, what the hell are you waiting for? Their albums keep getting fresher, funnier and more professionally produced...when they explode, you'll be kicking yourself for not knowing them earlier like me.
Not bad for the Final Fatal Force Fest.
Just remember kiddies, FFF=666.
