I've never been a huge fan of Korn...they've been emulated and redone by a million other wannabe's and it got so tiring. That coupled with some really boring nu-metal really turned me off to their music after Freak On A Leash.
So, it was a surprise that I found myself truly enjoying their most recent work, See You On The Other Side. I had first heard, "Liar" on Sirius Hard Attack and dug it...however, don't be fooled: that song is quite different from the rest of the album. The first few songs reminded me of a more progressive Marilyn Manson, and the vocal style that the lead singer uses really reminds me of Manson at times...but that doesn't detract from the musical quality that comes through...as well as the utter darkness of this album. From the stunning cover art to the strange little interludes, this is a trip to behold. I haven't yet had a chance to listen to this on acid, but I'm betting it would be very cool indeed. Each song takes you further down the rabbit-hole and "Liar" almost seems out of place with the over-flanged guitarwork on most of the remaining tunes.
It seems to me like Korn got tired of being pigeon-holed and everyone copying the sound they created...and decided to go off in a different, more exciting direction. They fully have kudos from me for not copying their own albums ad infinitium just to make a buck from their nu-metal base...they are moving forward...and that can only be a good thing.
