When I heard about this band, I was a little excited. The guy hawking these guys usually represents music that's a little lighter than what I usually promote, so I was thinking that they were finally going to start representing metal.
Milwaukee based Dark Shift crows about being the return of "True Melodic Thrash Metal" and spends paragraphs expounding upon their "animalistic fury" and their "all or nothing" attitudes.
Where things began to go wrong was when they were talking about playing shows with "seasoned veterans such as Megadeath, Dream Theater, Damage Plan and Testament."
I can forgive a typographical error, but this is one that has been made one too many times for this true metalhead. I winced in mental anguish...I didn't want to get petty, though...the bands listed ARE metal gods. Testament, for god's sake! Plus, I was assured that they were the winners of the "New York International Music Award for Best Metal Band". I figured that I at least owed them a listen for that reason alone.
Maybe I'm getting too old, but when someone tells me that they're returning to the roots of "true" Thrash Metal, I conjure up images of Dave Mustaine screaming out Black Friday or maybe D.R.I's Thrash Zone...hell, maybe even a hint of early Slayer and Testament. What I got was a crappy rehash of Avenged Sevenfold, which I hadn't known was possible until hearing these three songs.
As musicians, these guys know what they're doing. Their technical prowess is spot on and I give them two thumbs up for ability and recording quality. However, it gets muddied up when the singer is doing the same whiny melody as the lead guitar...something Avenged Sevenfold does all the fucking time...and something that I absolutely hate them for. Off topic a little, "Beast & The Harlot" could have been an amazing song had it not been for the whiny chorus....and the rest of the songs on the album....sorry.
But, back to Dark Shift...who will undoubtedly be upset at this review. I can only say that opinions are like assholes and everything is subjective. My opinion only counts because I have the floor. So, I leave you with my final assessment. If you like Avenged Sevenfold, you'll probably like Dark Shift...and since they are an unsigned band, they deserve your money more.
