I remember meeting Gwar for the first time during the tour for America Must Be Destroyed. I had just been bathed in a colorful array of blood, guts and OJ's decapitated spew and was sweaty and laughing my ass off. I had been listening to them for a few years, having bought Hell-o and Scumdogs of The Universe. I still wasn't prepared for their stageshow and am convinced that nothing can. Sleazy P. Martini walked out without his costume and gave those of us waiting at the backstage doors a raised eyebrow...I grinned and said, "Sleazy..." and for that, was rewarded with the first autograph. The rest of the band was just as awesome, spending time with all of us like we were old friends...and years later when I met Dave Brockie and his Experience band at the Jersey Metal Meltdown, they were all just as accessible and ready to challenge you to be the first to be drank under the table. Of course, I was shitfaced...so I probably made a complete ass of myself...good thing these are cool dudes, right?
So, I'm trying to figure out what can be said about Gwar that isn't already apparent. These guys totally fucking rule and they prove it with every album. Sure, they had a couple of early bummers but ever since Brockie was able to release his silly non-Gwar tunes on his own solo projects, we've been treated to such crack-laden treats barely seen since Scumdogs of The Universe....truly...were you not brutalized by Violence Has Arrived?
I ripped open my limited edition cd with the bonus dvd and watched the dvd first...of course. You get to see Brockie on crack and you witness a Q & A session with the members of Gwar as well as the mutilation of their previous engineer. It's very choice. I highly recommend the wine. Follow Brockie around as he gets kicked out of SlavePit Studios...and watch some hilarious commercials for their new dvd, "Bloodbath and Beyond" available now...I must own it immediately and you will too, slaves!
So, after that onslaught...I listened to the CD and remembered hearing all of these songs on Sirius Hard Attack during one of Gwar's exclusive interviews on the channel. The storyline is a blatant rip-off of Dante's Inferno with an obvious twist...in this bastardization, Virgil is replaced with Jitler...a beast with the head of Jesus on one side and Hitler on the other...with a huge cock. Thusly, their tour of Hell begins...and the antics for which the band is famous. I won't give away the whole story, there is a lot to regurgitate...but don't let your metal collection be without this album!
