The Dark Knight has been touted for about a year as the second coming of film greatness. They weren't too far off. I was definitely interested to see if they could surpass the sheer mass of the first film.
The entire time I sat and witnessed this nearly 3 hour epic, I kept thinking to myself, "what an asshole". I'm referring to the late Heath Ledger, who gave the performance of his life in this film...instead he took it from us. He could have had the role of "The Joker" for the rest of his career and made bank like Christian Bale is currently doing. He gives such depth and chaotic darkness to the character, it's no wonder he had trouble separating it from real life.
I'll try not to spoil things for those who didn't get out there and see this film opening night...but where the hell were you and what the hell else did you have to do on a Friday night but go see this film? Seriously. I hate spending money at theaters, but I planned for this one just as I'm planning for the two Frank Miller films next year.
Dark Knight is truly a journey into a dark night of the souls of Gotham. The new District Attorney is trying to clean up the city with the help of Commissioner Gordon and Batman...but feathers get ruffled when they attack all of the mob's money in one fell swoop. Who can stop the Batman?
This movie explores the dark sides of nearly every character...what a man will do to try to save a city that doesn't want him...what another man will do to save his family...what a city will do when faced with the choice of killing a boat full of "regular" citizens or a boat full of criminals...or what you would become if the one you loved died while you were forced to listen. Heads or Tails. Chaos or Order. It's all up for grabs in this crazy ride that never stops until the bitter end...and as the first one did, leaves you hungry for more, much more.
