I just got done reading this story on Yahoo News:
news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20080720/ap_on_go_co/gas_tax_highways
Basically, it outlines how the wonderful Democrats are planning on making all of our lives just a little bit harder this summer in the name of furthering their goals of American Marxism.
Here's a bit of the article:
The biggest fan of Marxism opposed lowering taxes? Say it isn't so...
Just three years ago, that trust fund enjoyed a surplus of $10 billion. Even without a tax freeze, the fund is projected to finish 2009 with a deficit of $3 billion. That that could grow as Americans drive less and buy less gas because of higher pump prices.
Wow. Supply & Demand at work. The price is higher, so people are buying less. Who coulda thunk it?
The consequence is that only about $27 billion in federal money will be available next year to states and local governments for new infrastructure investment even though the current highway act calls for spending $41 billion a year. For many, the solution is to raise rather than suspend or cut federal fuel taxes, which haven't changed since 1993.
The Transportation Construction Coalition, a group of industry companies and unions, said that if Congress does not do something about the shortfall, states will lose about one-third of their road and bridge money in the budget year starting Oct. 1. That would put 485,000 more jobs at risk.
Ahh...so if the unions don't get their money, they're gonna put a bunch of people out of work. Would that be so bad? They wouldn't be out of work long, there are always construction jobs available for those who want them.
That message carried the day this summer. But now Congress has the bigger task of dealing with the short-term deficit crisis in the fund and coming up with a new spending plan, including revisiting the gas tax issue, when the current six-year, $286 billion highway-transit act expires in September 2009.
Senate Democrats in May tried to add $5 billion to an aviation overhaul bill to replenish the highway trust fund next year; Republicans objected. Democrats tried again in June, but this time for $8 billion; Republicans objected to that, too.
Good. Maybe there are a few good Republicans left in Congress...
Congress should first reduce spending on pet projects, known as earmarks, argued Sen. Jim DeMint, R-S.C. "I'm not going to let the Senate spend all this money when nobody is looking, especially when we refuse to stop wasting billions of taxpayer dollars on earmarks."
Oberstar, D-Minn., said his committee is working on the next long-term highway bill. He estimated it will take between $450 billion and $500 billion over six years to address safety and congestion issues with highways, bridges and transit systems.
"We'll put all things on the table," Oberstar said, but the gas tax "is the cornerstone. Nothing else will work without the underpinning of the higher user fee gas tax."
Really? Nothing else will work? Gee, how about cutting some of your unconstitutional programs, asshole?
Including state and local levies, people in the U.S. pay about 47 cents on average in taxes for a gallon of gasoline. Fuel in many European countries costs $8 to $9 a gallon, with half or more of that going to taxes.
Other ideas that will be on the table when lawmakers write a bill next year including more toll roads and public-private partnerships, congestion pricing and user fees where drivers pay a tax based on how many miles they drive.
So here they use the familiar argument that "you know, they're paying much more in Europe than here", as if that somehow makes it okay. It justifies the high prices to these mental midgets. I feel like screamign "WE ARE NOT EUROPE!!" Our colonial ancestors FLED Europe to get away from their horseshit and to foment this seemingly ancient, and now mocked, idea of FREEDOM.
Then they raise the specter of user fees. They're going to start requiring you to give them your mileage at the beginning and end of the year on your income tax forms. They're going to make it more expensive for you to get to work by creating more toll roads...which by the way, is supposedly illegal on existing roads...but these guys are the new Imperial Majesties...if they don't like a rule, they make it up as they go along and we just take it.
So, their current solution is to raise gasoline taxes even higher! The article JUST said that revenue is down because people are buying less gasoline due to high prices. So, these jerkoffs think that artificially inflating the price of gasoline by raising taxes will actually create more revenue? Are they that stupid?
Anyone who has read my political pieces knows that I have called Democrats and other Marxist sympathizers less than intelligent. I was wrong. These assmops know exactly what they're doing. They know that raising taxes doesn't gain the government more spending cash. So why do they keep doing it? Ahh, to make YOU more dependent on their programs. They know that by and large, people are sheep. To feed a family, you need to work hard. If the paycheck you get every week isn't enough...then you can go to your local government officials and kiss their ring...get hungrier and hungrier going through their hoops and filling out their papers...and just when you are about to give up, they'll give you what you need.
Then you're hooked, baby. Then you are theirs. You're no longer a free man or woman...you're just another fucking slave. Every time I drive by government housing I don't see people...I just see a sea of slaves. A few break out...and try to make something of themselves. I did and I'm not blind anymore. It's my hope that I can help everyone see that 1984 is here. Big Brother is here. The real question is "What are you gonna do about it?"

Here's a bit of the article:
By JIM ABRAMS, Associated Press Writer
WASHINGTON - The political vision of a summer gas tax holiday died a quick death in Congress, losing to a view that federal excise taxes on gasoline and diesel fuel will have to go up if they go anywhere.
Despite calls from the presidential campaign trail for a Memorial Day-to-Labor Day tax freeze, lawmakers quickly concluded — with a prod from the construction industry — that having $9 billion less to spend on highways could create a pre-election specter of thousands of lost jobs.
Now, lawmakers quietly are talking about raising fuel taxes by a dime from the current 18.4 cents a gallon on gasoline and 24.3 cents on diesel fuel.
Barack Obama, the likely Democratic nominee, opposed the (tax holiday) idea from the beginning and the White House gave it a cold shoulder. Depriving the 52-year-old Highway Trust Fund of $9 billion at a time when it is heading into the red doomed the notion of a gas tax holiday in Congress.
